What is a dental implant, and who is it for?

A dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone to act in place of a natural tooth root, then topped with an abutment and a crown. The result is a firmly anchored tooth that chews close to natural — without grinding down the neighbouring teeth as a bridge would, and without removing it to clean as with a removable denture.

The dentist assesses your X-rays and bone before planning every case. After the implant is placed, the bone needs about 3–6 months to fuse with it before the permanent crown goes on; cases with insufficient bone may need a bone graft first.

Leaving a gap too long affects more than you think

The sooner you replace it, the more of your bite and bone you preserve.

Harder to chewYou avoid the side with the gap and don't chew fully, affecting digestion.
Neighbouring teeth driftTeeth beside the gap tilt in and the opposing tooth over-erupts, affecting the bite.
Lost confidenceA visible gap makes many people reluctant to smile fully.
Less clear speechA missing front tooth can make some sounds harder to pronounce.

Frequently asked questions

Does getting an implant hurt?
The surgery is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel no pain during the procedure. Afterwards there may be some tenderness for 2–3 days, which eases with the recommended pain relief.
How long do implants last?
With good hygiene and regular check-ups, implants can last for decades. The integrated root is usually permanent, while the crown on top may need care or replacement over time.
How much does an implant cost? Can I pay in instalments?
From 45,000 THB and up to around 60,000 THB per tooth depending on the implant system (crown included). 0% instalments are available up to 10 months via participating credit cards.
Can I have an implant if my bone is insufficient?
In many cases yes — a bone graft may be needed first or at the same time as placement. The dentist assesses this from your X-rays and explains before starting.
How long does the whole process take?
From placement to the permanent crown usually takes about 3–6 months in total, depending on bone integration and whether a bone graft is needed.
What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium root placed into the jawbone to act in place of a natural tooth root, then topped with an abutment and a crown — a firmly anchored tooth that chews close to natural, without relying on or grinding the neighbouring teeth.

Why replace a missing tooth — and bone loss

When a tooth is gone and no root stimulates the area, the bone there gradually resorbs and shrinks over time. An implant stimulates and helps preserve the bone level, and stops neighbouring teeth from tilting and the opposing tooth from over-erupting.

Implant vs bridge vs removable denture

Implant — fixed, no grinding of neighbours, closest to natural, but takes longer.

Bridge — fixed and faster, but the neighbouring teeth must be shaped as anchors.

Removable denture — economical and removable to clean, but less firm and needs adjustment.

Who is it for — and bone grafting

Suitable for people who have lost one to several natural teeth and have healthy gums. If bone is insufficient, a graft may be needed before or during placement. The dentist assesses this from your X-rays and explains before starting.

How to care for an implant so it lasts

Brush and use floss or interdental brushes around the implant regularly, avoid biting hard objects, and come for check-ups and scaling on schedule to keep the gum around the implant healthy long-term.
