What is calculus, and why does it remain after brushing?
Calculus is hardened plaque stuck firmly to the tooth surface and under the gum. Normal brushing can't remove it — it needs the dentist's instruments. Calculus harbours bacteria that cause gum inflammation and bad breath.
How often should I have scaling?
Usually every 6 months, but people who build up plaque quickly, smoke or have gum problems may need it more often. The dentist advises the interval that suits your mouth.
Does scaling hurt or cause sensitivity?
It is mostly painless — there may be slight sensitivity if there is a lot of calculus under the gum or gum inflammation, which usually improves as the gums recover. For very sensitive cases the dentist may use anaesthetic.
What are the risks of leaving calculus?
Built-up calculus causes gum inflammation, easy bleeding and bad breath, and if it progresses it can become periodontitis with receding gums and loose teeth. Regular scaling helps prevent this.
