Surgical vs simple wisdom-tooth removal
Simple extraction — for a wisdom tooth that has erupted enough to be removed normally.
Surgical removal — for a tooth buried in the gum or bone, where the gum is opened and the tooth may be sectioned. The dentist decides from your X-ray which is needed.
What are the risks of leaving it?
It can cause on-and-off pain, swelling and gum inflammation, push the neighbouring tooth out of line, or lead to decay and a cyst around the tooth. Removing it before symptoms start usually means an easier recovery.
Procedure, recovery and aftercare
It is done under local anaesthetic. Afterwards bite on gauze to stop bleeding, avoid vigorous rinsing on the first day, use a cold compress, eat soft food and take the medication advised. Swelling usually eases within a few days, then you return for suture removal.
