What is a dental crown, and who is it for?
A dental crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth to restore its strength, shape and colour. It is commonly used on teeth that are cracked, worn or deeply decayed, or teeth that have had root canal treatment and are more brittle than usual — bringing back normal chewing with a natural look.
The dentist assesses your X-rays and the remaining tooth structure, then chooses the right type of crown — all-ceramic (EMax, Zirconia) for the most natural look, or porcelain-fused-to-metal for strength and value. It usually takes 2–3 visits to fit the permanent crown.
A cracked, worn or deeply decayed tooth can worsen if left
A crown caps a weakened tooth before the damage spreads to the point of extraction.

All-Ceramic Zirconia
Strong and good-looking in one, metal-free — suits both front teeth and molars that need durability

What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a cap made to cover the whole tooth, restoring its strength, shape and colour so you can chew normally again with a natural look.
When is a crown needed?
Commonly on teeth that are cracked, worn or chipped over a wide area, decay too deep for a normal filling, or teeth that have had root canal treatment and are more brittle — as well as a crown on an implant or as part of a bridge.
How to choose the crown material
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) — strong and great value, ideal for molars under heavy load.
All-ceramic EMax — translucent and natural, ideal for front teeth.
All-ceramic Zirconia — strong and good-looking in one, metal-free, suits any position.
A crown as part of other treatment
A crown is often placed after root canal treatment to protect a brittle tooth, used as the crown on a dental implant, and is the building block of a bridge where joined crowns replace missing teeth.
How to care for a crown so it lasts
Brush and floss to keep the crown margin and gum clean, avoid biting hard objects, and come for check-ups and scaling on schedule. A well-cared-for crown often lasts many years to over a decade.
