What is gum disease, and who is it for?
Gum (periodontal) disease is caused by calculus and bacteria building up below the gum line, making the gums inflamed, red and prone to bleeding. Left untreated it spreads and destroys the bone that holds the teeth, until they loosen and can eventually be lost.
The dentist measures the periodontal pockets and assesses the severity, then treats it with scaling and root planing to remove the deposits below the gum. Severe cases may need several visits or periodontal surgery as well.

Gingivitis vs periodontitis
Gingivitis is the early stage — red, swollen gums that bleed easily — and can still be reversed. Left untreated it progresses to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth starts to break down.
Warning signs of gum disease
Red or swollen gums, bleeding when brushing, bad breath, receding gums that make teeth look longer, sensitivity at the neck of the tooth, or teeth starting to loosen — if you notice these, come in for a check.
Treatment with scaling and root planing
The dentist removes calculus above and below the gum and smooths the root surfaces (root planing) to reduce bacterial build-up. Advanced cases may need further treatment and regular follow-up.
What are the risks of leaving it?
Untreated periodontitis is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults — the supporting bone is gradually destroyed until teeth loosen and can be lost. Treating it early helps save the teeth.
Keeping your gums healthy
Brush correctly, floss or use interdental brushes daily, and come for scaling and a gum check on schedule (usually every 6 months) to control gum disease and prevent it returning.
